Kate Ford's Devil's River Canoe Trip

Kate Ford's Devil's River Canoe Trip

The RUX 70L was built for river trips. Weatherproof, easy to carry, and designed with efficient organization top of mind, the RUX System smooths the logistics out for wild river adventures like these. RUX community member Kate Ford and her crew tackled the Devil’s River in Texas this past fall, and had one heck of an adventure! Here’s her trip report:

The Mission

Seven of us (myself, Ali, Charles, Riley, Guerra, Cole and Peter) floated a ~20 mile section of the Devils River in TX, which is right on the border with Mexico. Some combination of us do the float every year. It's 3 days/2 nights and we camped along the river bank and on islands.

The Gear

We brought 2 canoes and 3 kayaks--the RUX 70Ls were amazing to have in the canoes. Last year we had an issue with loose gear cluttering the canoes and RUX really solved that. Last year one of the canoes tipped on a rapid and we were bobbing for gear for about an hour. Thankfully that didn't happen this year but if it had we would have only had to find the single RUX, with all dry gear inside!

Trip Highlights

Highlights were: jumping off dolan falls and various boulders into the water, fishing (got into some good large and smallmouth bass, seeing the solar eclipse from the water (the Devils was directly in the path for it) and cooking some epic meals.

How’d you use RUX on the trip?

We used one of the RUX for food and cooking supplies (we take river cooking very seriously) and it also housed all the snacks. We'd reach in and toss snacks to all the other boats as we floated down. They really did make organizing the boats much easier and we weren't digging around looking for things.

When the wheels fall off…

Kind of wild story: the night before we floated we stayed at a B&B outside of Del Rio. There was a group of guys staying there who just got off the river and told us they lost their gopro on a rapid. On our second day of floating Riley saw something orange in the water and it was their gopro just floating around. We tossed it in a RUX 70L for safe keeping (we clearly had superior gear storage to the guys who lost it) and returned it to them.
