RUX 70L Materials 101

Materials 101 - What's a RUX 70L Made From?

Posted by Chris Fleugel on

RUX is designed to last a lifetime… We’ve chosen every single material, fabric and piece of hardware on a RUX with durability and sustainability in mind. Let’s dive deep into what exactly RUX products are made from and why we chose them!

Fabrics and Coating

Starting off, the core of a RUX 70L if made from a 840D TPU Coated Nylon.

“840” refers to the thickness of the nylon fabric, while “D” stands for denier, which is a measure of the thread weight. Nylon is already hydrophobic in nature, but we’ve taken it a step further and coated both sides in TPU, also know as Thermoplastic Polyurethane.

The end result is an ultra-durable, waterproof and dust-proof fabric that will last a lifetime. Similar materials can be found in some duffle bags, soft shelled coolers, or dry bags.

RF Welding

Although, not a material, RF welding (also known as Radio Frequency welding), is a revolutionary technology that sends a frequency through the TPU coating of the fabric, heating it up and bonding together the walls of the 70L to the base. This process leads to an incredibly secure bond that is fully waterproof and dust-proof.

Base Material

The base of the 70L is made from a high density close cell foam thats PU (polyurethane) laminated. It’s then thermo-molded to create its structure and shape. We’ve opted to use the corrugation pattern, which gives the base some grip if you’re throwing your RUX 70L into a truck bed or onto a roof rack

Collapsable Corner Stays

The Corner Stays are one of the key features that make a RUX a RUX… The Corner Stays allow you to collapse your RUX down flat when not in use, but seamlessly spring back up to it’s full 70L volume. We’ve chosen a material called Spring Steel for the stays, as they have no memory, so they will always pop back up, even after extended use. The spring steel Corner Stays are also coated in silicone, to aid in sliding into the tunnel during setup, as well as protect the raw steel from the elements.

Nylon Webbing Carry Straps

This bomber material makes up all of the straps you’ll find on a RUX. The red shoulder straps are made from a 38mm webbing, in order to distribute the load efficiently. The rest of the straps are made up of 20mm webbing. We’ve securely strapped RUX down using the nylon webbing on snowmobiles, roof racks, in vans, and on trucks for literally tens of thousands of miles on the highway and offroad.

RUX Utility Rails

In order to tie down and attach components to the RUX Utility Rails, we need a material that was ultra-strong and durable. All our development lead us to “Glass-Filled Nylon”. This super strong plastic has an incredibly high tensile strength and is used in alpine climbing tools. We figure, if it’ll take you up Everest, it’s good enough for us! To this date, we’ve never seen a Utility Rail fail. Give er’ hell!

Along with choosing to build with the best materials on the planet, all RUX products are backed by a Lifetime Guarantee! We’ve designed the 70L where each and every part can be completely disassembled. This allows us to repair or replace any part that may be broken, ensuring your RUX will last a lifetime.
